Incentives for Math and Science Teachers and Students
National Math and Science Initiative, Inc.

The National Math and Science Initiative, Inc. is a non-profit organization with its initial $125 million in funding coming from ExxonMobil.  This organization is supporting two programs - Advanced Placement Strategies and UTeach.

Advanced Placement Strategies (for Advanced Placement math and science courses) is a program that includes teacher training, additional time on task for students, teacher mentoring, and financial incentives for teachers and students based on academic results.  Grantees, to date, come from:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Virginia
  • Washington

UTeach encourages math and science majors to enter the teaching profession by offering compact degrees and financial assistance.  Grantees, to date, come from:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

Improving Student Learning Through Strategic Compensation
Center for Teaching Quality

A new report released by the Center for Teaching Quality, which is baed on the recommendations of 16 teachers from across Kansas, calls upon state and local schol districts to change the way teachers are paid.  Improved Student Learning Through Strategic Compensation is based on four "pillars:"

  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Level of Student's Learning
  • Leadership
  • Market Value


 


Carlson Speaks to Washington Task Force
April 14, 2008

On Monday April 14, ECI President Jim Carlson delivered a presentation to the Washington State Joint Task Force on Basic Education Finance.  Invited by the state's Institute for Public Policy after a recommendation from the Washington Education Association, Jim reviewed the national landscape of alternative compensation, shared his assertions regarding the effectiveness and appropriateness of each type of system, identified his six guiding principles and four objectives, and explained a potentially sound structure for future alternative approaches to teacher pay.
